Preparing a clear stable handover

Give the next responsible person a readable record of agreed tasks, completed work and open questions. Use existing owner or professional instructions; this sheet does not decide a horse’s care needs.

Step 1

Use the established instructions

Copy the owner’s or responsible professional’s agreed instructions. This sheet does not calculate feed, prescribe medication or decide a horse’s care needs.

Step 2

Name the person responsible

Make ownership clear for each task. Include only the contact details the next caregiver actually needs.

Step 3

Make pending work visible

Distinguish completed jobs from pending ones. If an instruction is unclear, record the question and confirm it with the responsible person.

Step 4

Hand over privately

Review the sheet together, then copy or print it. It is not a public horse profile, a shared cloud record or an automatic import into Horse.

Examples to adapt

Worked example: the next stable shift

Before the shift change — outgoing caregiver — done

“Agreed task list reviewed; completed work marked; unresolved items left pending.” Mark this Done only after the review has actually happened.

At handover — incoming caregiver — pending

“Confirm the horse and location against the private records, then review the owner-approved instructions.” The public example intentionally contains no horse identifier, contact details or stable access information.

Before the next agreed check-in — assigned caregiver — pending

“Ask the responsible person to clarify the unfinished task and record the answer privately.” Do not replace an unclear instruction with a guess.

A final check before the shift changes

  • Confirm the correct horse and location using your private records.
  • Give each agreed job one clear person responsible for confirming completion.
  • Separate completed work, pending work and questions awaiting an answer.
  • Make the existing instructions available to the next authorized caregiver.
  • Agree when and how the next handover will happen, then confirm receipt.

Common questions

Can this checklist replace the stable’s care instructions?

No. It is an organizational aid. Keep using the instructions agreed with the owner and responsible professionals.

Can I publish the completed handover?

Keep it private. A completed sheet may contain horse identifiers, personal contact details or stable access information that should not be in a public page.

Does it create a record in the Horse app?

No. The browser checklist has no automatic import or cloud sharing. Copy or print it before leaving; Horse support is the current product next step linked here.

Put it into practice

Start with the stable handover checklist, then copy your finished draft before leaving.
